Hyundai's Electric Future: Santa Fe and Ute with Range-Extenders in the Works
Hyundai is gearing up to revolutionize its electric vehicle (EV) lineup by developing a range-extender technology for its upcoming models, including the next-generation Santa Fe and a highly anticipated electric ute. This move underscores Hyundai's commitment to expanding its electric offerings, catering to both family-oriented SUVs and utility vehicles.
Electric Santa Fe and Ute on the Horizon
Hyundai's plans for an all-electric Santa Fe have recently come to light, marking the brand's push towards a fully electric future. The Santa Fe, known for its versatility and family-friendly features, is set to join the EV lineup alongside an electric ute. While details have been sparse, it's now confirmed that both of these models will eventually feature range-extender technology.
A range-extender is a small petrol or diesel engine that generates electricity to recharge the vehicle's battery, extending the driving range without directly powering the wheels. This approach allows Hyundai to address range anxiety, a common concern among potential EV buyers.
A New Player in the Electric Ute Market
Hyundai's foray into the electric ute market is particularly noteworthy, as the segment is heating up with competition. The electric ute, which has been in development for some time, is expected to compete with models like the Rivian R1T, offering a driving range of over 530 kilometers.
Although Hyundai has not officially confirmed the production of an electric ute, John Kett, the chief operating officer of Hyundai's Australian arm, has hinted at the possibility of an "electrified" ute. Trademark filings suggest that the ute could be named either T7 or T10. The first camouflaged prototypes are anticipated to appear as early as next year, with a potential launch in 2026 or 2027.
Range-Extenders for Future Hyundai Models
The development of range-extenders is not limited to the Santa Fe and the ute. Hyundai's engineers are working on integrating this technology across several upcoming electric models, including the Genesis GV70. However, according to reports, these range-extenders are not expected to reach production until 2028 or 2029.
This timeline aligns with the lifecycle of Hyundai's current models. The fifth-generation Santa Fe, recently launched in Australia, is currently powered by a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol hybrid engine. With a typical five-year model cycle, it's likely that the sixth-generation Santa Fe, which could debut around 2029, will be offered as a fully electric SUV with the option of a range-extender.
